Enough with the whispers and off-the-record remarks from engineers. We finally had the chance to drive a production-model 2011 Chevrolet Volt… well, almost. Let’s say that the version we tried is very close to what will soon be sold to American consumers. And, you guessed it, Canadians will have to wait until next spring!
The concept behind the 2011 Chevrolet Volt is so simple that it actually required a lot of thought. Since all-electric vehicles are still unable to offer enough range to suit most drivers, the GM engineers had the brilliant idea of pairing a gas engine with two electric motors. In this case, the gas engine does not power the front wheels. Instead, it acts a generator whose only function is to recharge the battery. The beauty behind the Volt
To make a long story short, the Volt can cover 40 miles (65 km) on a single charge. That means that if you live 30 km from your work, you can do the round trip in all-electric mode. If, however, you have a longer distance to cover, the gas engine will kick in to provide electricity to the battery. A while ago, a hot debate was triggered when various websites claimed that the Volt’s gas engine powered the vehicle’s wheels. But one of the engineers (and a pretty one at that) in charge of the Volt project, and who accompanied us on our test drive, maintains that this is not the case. The confusion arises from the fact that when energy demands are very high, the power produced by the gas engine is immediately used by the electric engines instead of transiting through the battery.

This week saw the Future of Electric Vehicles USA 2010 conference take place in San Jose, California. Billed as “the world’s only event that covers all forms of electric vehicles – land, water, and air,” it included a series of presentations on new technologies, an exhibit hall, and master classes that featured trips to nearby Silicon Valley tech development firms. Gizmag was one of the main sponsors of the event, and we were there to learn more about what’s happening in the world of EVs.
The conference opened with an address from company Chairman Dr. Peter Harrop, who gave an overview of the present state and future of the EV industry.
First of all, despite how much we hear about vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and TeslaRoadster, Harrop pointed out that cars make up only about half the market for EVs. This will likely continue to be the case, with two-wheelers such as scooters and e-bikes constituting a significant portion of the other half. His company predicts that about 5 to 18 percent of cars will be pure electric or hybrid by 2020, and that the advent of technologies such as smart skins and energy-harvesting components will greatly enhance their performance – smart skin technology proposes that multi-layer materials making up the outside of the vehicle serve as its battery and/or photovoltaic system. Not all the new tech will be brand new, however… Harrop also spoke of a sense of déjà vu within the EV industry, in which some hundred-year-old ideas (such as wheel-mounted pancake motors) have been making a comeback.
BUILDING THE RIGHT KIND OF CARS
Prof. Pietro Perlo, Senior Director at Research Center Fiat, hit upon a point that was echoed by other presenters. “A vehicle has to be born electrical,” he stated. “We used to say, ‘A vehicle has to be born smart,’ because if you’re born stupid, you can go to university, but at the end you remain stupid.” In other words, throwing an electric motor and battery pack in a car designed for a combustion engine is not the way to go. He said that such cars could take advantage of smart onboard photovoltaic systems, along with an “Internet of Energy,” that would link producers, suppliers and consumers of energy in an electronic smart grid system.

IDTechEx Printed Electronics USA 2010 award winners

The fourth annual printed electronics winners were announced on Dec 1st at the IDTechEx Awards Dinner in Santa Clara, USA. The awards recognize outstanding progress in the development and commercialization of printed electronics, an industry that produces a huge amount of technical innovation which will be used in many products.
The entries were judged by an eminent panel comprising of Dr Steven Novack, Idaho National Laboratory (INL), USA; Professor Iain McCulloch, Imperial College London, UK and Professor Vivek Subramanian, University of California, Berkeley, USA.
The award ceremony is part of the IDTechEx event Printed Electronics USA 2010 – which was attended by over 1200 people from 28 countries – the world’s largest event on the topic.

Minister of state for environment and forests Jairam Ramesh came down against the use of bio-fuels in automobiles, saying food security concerns were the priority.On the sidelines of an automobiles event in New Delhi, Ramesh said, ”We should take a cautious approach towards it (bio-fuel) as its production would require land and crops. We all know that government has to initiate incentives, programs to promote electric vehicles. But in India, government representatives are commenting as stated above which will be de-motivating more than 50 number of electric vehicle manufacturers (as published in http://www.evhub.in) in India. This type of comments are not recommended by responsible persons, when already hundreds of crores(10 millions) invested on it. In contrast, we can see how US government is involving to promote electric vehicles. The difference is attitude.

In one way it reminds us of the German predecessor: the Volkswagen. A car not produced according to market demand, but for dubious ideological targets. However, the new ‘Voltswagen’, on sale for $41,000, costs, when all subsidies are accounted for, about $81,000. Not only is it worlds apart from the original Volkswagen, but its creation signifies a distorted economy: taxpayers funding a vehicle which can only lead to loss and a shortage. In addition, comes the government subsidy of $7,500 for purchasers of the car, a nice addition for ‘upscale urban liberals’, some of Obama’s strongest supporters.

David Sandalow starts his 5-mile commute each day by unplugging an orange extension cord connecting his Toyota Prius hybrid to an outlet in his brick carport.
His Prius, which was converted two years ago to allow him to recharge the battery from an electrical outlet, gets more than 80 miles per gallon and lets him drive 30 miles on a single charge. He fills up his car with gasoline about once every month or two, an oddity in a transportation sector long dominated by the internal combustion engine.
“If you’re thirsty, you can get a Diet Coke or orange juice or water. If you’re hungry you can get a hamburger or hot dog or a fruit plate. If you want to drive someplace, you only have one choice. You can use gasoline or petroleum-based products,” said Sandalow, the Energy Department’s assistant secretary for policy and international affairs. “That doesn’t seem strange to us … but it’s odd. It’s strange that we are utterly dependent on this one fuel source for mobility.”

For many consumers, electric vehicles (EVs) have the additional advantage of being much quieter than conventional-fuelled cars.
However, road safety campaigners have called for EVs to be louder in order to alert pedestrians of oncoming traffic.
This has led Toyota to bring in an Approaching Vehicle Audible System for its Prius hybrid.

According to the minister, there are differences between India and other countries that produce bio-fuels, as the country is faced with enormous population and shortage of land. This precludes the mass production of bio-fuels, which are procured from crops, plants and trees, although such fuels are environment friendly and cleaner than fossil fuels.
”We are a country of a billion people adding ten million every year, and we have serious food security issues. Diverting land or crops for bio-fuels cannot be a sustainable option,” the minister said.
His comments seem to contradict the union government’s stand. The government has given a directive of blending of bio-fuel with diesel. In 2007, the government had mandated addition of 5 per cent of bio-fuel (ethanol) in diesel. An indicative target of 20 per cent blending of bio-fuels, both for bio-diesel and bio-ethanol, by 2017 has been proposed.
